2007-2008 Choral Auditions
for Cantoria and Chamber Choir

Students who wish to audition for membership in Cantoria or Chamber Choir, a yearlong commitment, are asked to sing an audition. The nature of the audition is based on whether you have already been a member of the ensemble for which you are auditioning. Students auditioning as “new ensemble members”—i.e., you have not sung in that choir yet—are asked to sing an individual audition. This audition includes a brief interview to learn about your musical experiences and interests, and it is not intended to be stressful. For membership in Cantoria, students under further consideration after the individual audition will be asked to sing in a group “call-back”.

Audition Procedures for new ensemble members

 1. Sing a vocal audition. Sign up for an audition time outside OP 1368 (Dr. Jennings’ office). For this audition, prepare a vocal solo of your choosing, typically an art song, operatic aria, or well-crafted folk song. Copies of “America the Beautiful” will be provided for those without other choices of solo repertoire. Choose music that you can perform comfortably to best demonstrate your musical and vocal skills.

During this audition the student will:

  •  Sing a prepared vocal solo without the accompaniment

  •  Sing simple vocal exercises

  •  Sing tonal and rhythmic patterns

  •  Sight-read a melody or your vocal part in a choral score

 2. Attend the first class period of Cantoria or Chamber Choir on Monday, August 27, for the sharing of audition information and other business. Cantoria meets at 12:30 p.m., Chamber Choir at 3:30 p.m.; both meet in OP 2350.

 3. For Cantoria: if asked, attend the group “call-back”.

Soprano and Alto: Wednesday, August 29 (12:30 p.m.)

Tenor and Bass: Thursday, August 30 (12:30 p.m.)
