Soprano, Maureen Carlson, is on the faculty at Truman State University as Assistant Professor of Music. She graduated from Michigan State University with both the Doctorate of Musical Arts and the Master of Music degrees in vocal performance. Dr. Carlson studied with soprano, Professor Melanie Helton. She holds a Bachelor of Music in Education from Heidelberg University, and a certificate in Italian language from the Centro Linguistico Italiano Dante Aligieri in Florence, Italy.
Dr. Carlson has been a guest clinician for high school choirs throughout Michigan. She has been an adjudicator for the National Association Teachers of Singing since 2005. This past summer she participated in the NATS Summer Intern program where she was one of twelve teachers invited to partake in a ten day seminar with master teachers from around the country. Dr. Carlson was fortunate enough to be under the tutelage of master teacher Professor George Shirley. During the summers of 2006 and 2007 she was visiting Professor of Music, Art, Literature and Language in Bregenz, Austria through Michigan State University. She also took part in the Richard Miller Institute of Voice at Oberlin College.
Dr. Carlson has performed with the Truman State University Orchestra, Heidelberg University Orchestra, Rochester Hills Symphony, Adrian College Symphony, and Ohio Northern University Orchestra. She has given many solo recitals including Florence, Italy, Interlochen Arts Academy, and Truman State University. Dr. Carlson continues to pursue her academic scholarship: How cabaret composers, performers, and establishments during the Weimar Republic reacted to the ban of censorship. She continues to perform while teaching as a full-time professor at Truman.
