Truman State University offers two master’s degree tracks, the Master of the Arts (M.A.) or Master of Arts in Education (M.A.E.). Both of these degrees include emphasis in vocal music. The M.A. degree allows for concentration in choral conducting or voice (among other areas), while the M.A.E degree is focused on preparation of teachers, including certification for teaching in the public schools. For more information on these degrees, visit the Graduate Students portion of the Music Department Web-site.
Regardless of the degree, Truman State University offers a wealth of opportunities for graduate students, including fantastic performance ensembles, small class sizes, individualized learning, and opportunity for leadership roles.
Graduate Teaching/Research Assistantships in choral and vocal music are available for students enrolled in the Master of Arts (M.A.) in Music degree program. A quarter-time (10 hours per week) assistantship includes a full tuition waver (in-state or out-of-state) and a stipend of $8,000 per academic year.
Vocal GTRA’s teach applied voice students and voice classes. Choral GTRA’s are involved in all aspects of the choral program, from auditions to a graduate conducting recital with the auditioned Chamber Choir. Often, choral GTRA’s are assigned their own choir or share conducting duties of a choir with another graduate student. In addition, graduate students in choral music will have opportunities to serve as assistant conductors for the University Chorus (200+ voice choir), Cantoria (65 voice auditioned ensemble), and for the men’s and women’s ensembles.
