Musicology Studies at Truman State University offer the opportunity to examine both the history of music, and the connections between music and culture at both the Undergraduate and Graduate level. The Perspectives in Music series offers the non-major the chance to encounter European music, World Music, Jazz, and the music of Broadway and Hollywood in an academic environment suitable for students of all backgrounds. The music major will study in detail the history and pedagogy of European music, and will also learn research methodology in all facets of musicology. The development of writing skills is also a key component of musicology studies. Examples of recent student papers include: "k.d. lang and Queer Country" by Karianne Jones, "Stereotypical or Atypical: The Portrayal of The Governess in Benjamin Britten's The Turn of the Screw" by Eugenia Siegal, and "A New Mode of Thinking: Application and Analysis of Eastern European and Middle Eastern Folk Music in Modern Jazz" by Eric Schweizer. Recently, the 2010 Truman Student Research Conference Plenary Address was given by Dr. Denise Von Glahn, who is Professor of Musicology and Director of the Center for Music of the Americas at The Florida State University, College of Music.
